Klimax tou Paradeisou

For the works shown here, Suzanne drew inspiration from the book 'The Ladder of Divine Ascent' by the 7th-century monk Johannes Climacus. In the Middle Ages, the ladder symbolized the gradual aspect of spiritual elevation and the connection between Heaven and Earth. For the artist, the ladder represents the processes that we, as humans, go through in search of ourselves. For each of the 30 'steps' from the book, she designed a symbol. These symbols depict both the insights that enrich us and the monsters that we must fight on the path to self-realization. Within this theme, Suzanne showcases her conceptual strength: by arranging the symbols in different ways or isolating them and executing them in various media, a new perspective is continually created.

Voor de hier getoonde werken liet Suzanne zich inspireren door het boek ‘De Geestelijke Ladder’ van de 7e eeuwse monnik Johannes Climacus. In de Middel-Eeuwen stond de ladder symbool voor het graduele aspect van de geestelijke verheffing en de verbinding tussen Hemel en Aarde. Voor de kunstenaar staat de ladder voor de processen waar wij als mens, op zoek naar ons Zelf, doorheen gaan. Bij elk van de 30 ‘trappen’ uit het boek ontwierp zij een symbool. Deze symbolen tonen zowel de inzichten die ons verrijken, als de monsters die wij, op het pad naar Zelf verwezenlijking, moeten bevechten. Door de symbolen op verschillende manieren te rangschikken of juist te isoleren en uit te voeren in diverse media ontstaat steeds een nieuw perspectief.
