Tabernacle

“Tabernacle for Silence” originated from the idea of creating a sacramental house as a dwelling place for the silence within ourselves—inner silence as a contemporary sacrament.

Having grown up with a Catholic background, the artist has always been drawn to the architecture of churches and religious art, particularly from the late Gothic period. For this piece, she chose an abstract, humanoid figure as a representation of her personal inward journey, while maintaining the angular aspect of a house.
During the time-consuming and technically challenging creation process, Suzanne consciously sought silence within herself. She discovered that the silence she wished to experience was primarily located in the torso (stomach-heart area). This led her to explore the significance of silence, naturally encountering the importance of both speaking and remaining silent. This is symbolized in the long neck, embroidered with various sayings (including those from the Desert Fathers) about silence and speech.
Symbolism plays a crucial role in the artist’s work and is prevalent throughout the "Tabernacle." Pearls inside the belly represent purity, while the eagle on the face and upper arm symbolizes the strength of independent vision and perspective. The anchor on the arm stands for steadfastness, determination, loyalty, and hope. The leaves on the legs symbolize (personal) growth.
This work represents a precursor to the later themes of ‘Tower’ and 'The Divine Ladder' (or ‘Klimax tou Paradeisou’).

‘Tabernakel voor Stilte’ is ontstaan vanuit het idee een sacramentshuis te maken als woonplaats voor de stilte in onszelf; innerlijk stilte als hedendaags sacrament.

Opgegroeid met een katholieke achtergrond, heeft de kunstenaar zich altijd aangetrokken gevoeld tot de architectuur van kerken en religieuze kunst uit met name de laat-gotiek. Zij koos voor dit object voor een geabstraheerde, mensachtige figuur als personificatie van haar persoonlijke proces van naar binnen keren. Tegelijk wilde zij het hoekige aspect van een huis bewaren.

Tijdens het tijdsintensieve en technisch uitdagende maakproces zocht Suzanne bewust de stilte in haarzelf op. Zij ontdekte dat de stilte die zij wilde ervaren zich voornamelijk in de romp (maag-hart gebied) bevond. Zij onderzocht de betekenis van stilte en kwam daarmee automatisch het belang van zwijgen en niet zwijgen tegen. Dit verbeeldde zij in de lange nek, die geborduurd is met allerlei uitspraken (van o.a. de Woestijnvaders) over zwijgen en spreken.

Symboliek speelt een belangrijke rol in het werk van de kunstenaar, en is op Tabernakel overal te vinden. Zo staan de parels aan de binnenkant van de buik symbool voor zuiverheid en de adelaar op het gezicht en de bovenarm voor de kracht van onafhankelijke visie en overzicht. Het anker, dat zich op de arm bevindt, staat symbool voor standvastigheid, vastberadenheid en trouw en voor hoop. De bladeren op de benen zijn een symbool voor (persoonlijke) groei.

Dit werk is een opmars naar de latere thema’s ‘Toren’ en ‘De Geestelijke Ladder’.
